How to Care for Your Pets When Moving

There are many things that you need to manage when moving, such as packing, utility bills change of address requests, coordinating the movers, and cleaning. When you are putting together your to-do list, don’t overlook one essential item: caring for the family pet.

If you have a pet, then you know that your furry friend is another member of the family. So, you need to make an effort to make the transition as smooth as possible, helping your pet settle into the new location. Follow these tips to ensure that your pet is cared for during the move:

Comfortable Transportation

Whether you will be boarding an airplane or you have a long drive in the car, you need to make sure that your pet has a place to rest during the journey. If you don’t already have one, it is a good idea to buy a sturdy carrier. Purchase the carrier in advance so the animal can become familiar with the carrier before the day of the move.

Small animals, such as cats, should be kept in the carrier during the drive. But, larger animals, such as dogs, could be kept out of the carrier during parts of the drive. Invest in a restraining harness that clicks into a seatbelt of your car. This harness prevents injury and reduces the risk of distraction to the driver.

Don’t make the mistake of putting the pet carrier in the cargo area of your moving truck! The temperature can be too hot during the summer, and it can be a scary experience for the animal.

Frequent Stops for Your Pet

Plan to stop every two hours to allow the animal time for a bathroom break and a snack. You might consider bringing their favorite treats, a water bowl, and some of their favorite toys that can be used during these rest stops. If possible, find a rest stop location with a grassy area where you can play catch for 10 minutes before getting back in the car.
