Tips for a Successful Move into an Apartment or Rental Home

The U.S. Census Bureau has reported that most Americans move an average of 11.4 times over the course of their lifetime. People often move to be closer to family or to start a new job. Regardless of the reason that you are moving, each move can be stressful if you don’t have professional assistance.

There are a few additional factors that need to be considered if you are moving to a rental home or apartment. Here are a few tips that will help you have a successful moving day:

Ask the Right Questions

Have a conversation with your landlord to ask a few questions that will impact your move. These are a few questions that you need to bring up:

  • Where should we park the moving truck?
  • When will you have your keys in hand?
  • How should the rent be paid before you move into the apartment?
  • Are there service elevators to reach higher floors in the apartment building?
  • Is there a move-in checklist that needs to be completed first?

It is always a good idea to double-check the move-in date with your landlord so that you don’t have to go through the hassle of rescheduling with a moving company.

Update Utilities and Insurance

Make sure that you have the utilities set up as soon as possible. For example, if the move goes into the evening and you don’t have the electricity setup, then it will be difficult for the movers to get the furniture into your home safely.

Renters insurance will keep your property protected, and you should have this policy in place from the moment you step in the door.

Consider the Size of the Rental

If you own a lot of furniture and personal items, then you need to make sure that there is enough space in your rental for all of the items. Compare the square footage of your current home with the new location, and also look at the storage closets that are available. It is easier to downsize your belongings before you move into the new location so that you can decrease the items that need to be moved.
